One of these posters had once worked in a large independent bookstore, and passed it on to his old employer-who in turn passed it to Baen Books-which offered Correia a publishing contract. His self-published first novel, Monster Hunter International, was written for-and marketed directly to-the posters on these boards. The original rough draft of Dead Six appeared on one of these forums, "The High Road", in a thread started by Mike Kupari called "Welcome Back, Mr. Correia used to be active on firearms discussion boards, where he would write about his interest in weapons and low-budget monster movies, and also get inspiration from various online threads. His stories are typically action-oriented with accurate and detailed depictions of firearms usage. Writing career Ĭorreia's works often include magic and mythical monsters, such as vampires and werewolves. In 2013, he began working as a writer full-time. He also started working as a firearms instructor and a CCW instructor. He worked as an accountant for several years before Correia opened a gun store with business partners while continuing to work as an accountant. Īfter returning home from his mission, he got married before graduating with an accounting degree. While attending Utah State University, Correia-who was raised Catholic-joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a two-year mission in Alabama. He stayed in California for about a year before joining his family in Utah. Some women may also find it a hard read as certain people may view aspects of it as misogynistic.įor those who have read the series, do the books get better over time? as much as I loved the first book it's not without it's problems.Correia grew up in El Nido, California working on his Portuguese father's dairy farm until his mid-teens, when his family moved to Utah. I would however not recommend it to those who cannot stomach violence as the novel is loaded with graphically written scenes. Fans of creatures like werewolves, vampires, etc will find enjoyment as the book is filled with that kind of stuff. Any gun nuts will also enjoy this as the author clearly has a love and passion for weaponry of all categories. I would recommend the book to those of you who enjoy Harry Potter as it does draw quite a few parallels to the series although it is most certainly not aimed at children. The first chapter of the book was one of the most intense and absorbing beginning chapters I have ever read and really did a great job of hooking me in. Violence, macho masculinity and pretty much every fictional monster you can think of made this book incredibly addicting. It can be very cliche and pulpy at times but I'll be damned if I didn't enjoy every single page of it. Most of the characters aren't all that interesting, especially the main protagonist who has the personality of cardboard. Pretty much any monster you may have heard of in pop culture exists in this series. It's set in modern day and focuses on a team of Monster Hunters who kill creatures of darkness in order to collect large bounties. Before this I hadn't picked up a book in at least half a decade. Got gifted the first book in the Monster Hunter series as an early Christmas present and finished reading it within the first week of getting it.
